The first fuel cell – 1842

Sir William Robert Grove“Sir William Robert Grove of Swansea, Wales was the creator of the first fuel cell in 1842.  Although he studied classics at Cambridge and served the legal system for most of his life, he is best known for his brief, but exceptional days as a scientist. [In July 2011] BBC Radio Wales invited three distinguished guests to their Science Café program to discuss the life of Sir William on the 200th anniversary of his birth. The guests included Environmental Lawyer and co-author of William Grove’s biography William Wilson, Dr. Iwan Morus, historian of science at Aberystwyth University; and Dr. Timothy Davies, Lecturer in Electronic Engineering at Swansea University….” (Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Energy Association – August 2011)
